Classical Archives is thrilled to present an exclusive interview with superstar tenor Javier Camarena on the occasion of the release of his new Pentatone CD “Sogno.” This new album presents a selection from the more than 500 songs written by the Italian composer Francesco Paolo Tosti (1846-1916). On this album, Camarena and his pianist Angel Rodriguez perform Tosti songs in Italian, French and English.
In this interview with Barry Lenson of Classical Archives, Javier Camarena reveals that “Sogno” is a labor of love in which he performs songs that he discovered when he was a young tenor studying singing in Mexico.
It is remarkable and wonderful that Mr. Camarena has turned his attention to recording this CD. He is, after all, one of the true opera superstars of today. Specializing to date in operas by Bellini, Donizetti and Rossini, he possesses all the assets that any tenor could ever hope for – a ravishing sound, heart-melting legato, astonishing fioratura, not to mention a brilliant high range that seems to march out of the pages of history.
“Sogno” is available for your listening pleasure now on Classical Archives. Note too that Mr. Camarena previously recorded a Pentatone CD of the works of just one composer, Gaetano Donizetti. That album, “Signor Gaetano,” is available for listening now for members of Classical Archives.
Until then, please enjoy our conversation with Mr. Camarena (above), in which he discusses his training, his love of Tosti, his approach to singing bel canto repertoire, and much more. Please enjoy, and please also consider starting a trial membership in Classical Archives.
